How we made a remote control for a set-top box

Movix is home television and set-top boxes from Dom.ru provider, with whom we have been working since 2011. We took part in the creation of three generations of the interface for the set-top boxes, the branded packaging for the Movix set-top box and recently we designed the new remote control.

We did research

To design a convenient remote control, we carefully listened to the client and their subscribers, studied competitors and world experience, and found out the frequency of use of each button.

Made prototypes

We created 3D models of various shapes of the remote control and printed them out on a printer in order to touch, test, and finally choose one – the most convenient.

Selected materials

A remote control is what a person holds in their hands every day. And therefore, it should be pleasant to touch, and the buttons should be made in such a way that you want to press them. To do this, we touched all available plastics and pressed all the button mechanisms we could find.

Added terebon’ka

The remote control has a small textile tag with a company logo on it – we call it “terebon’ka”. It helps to brand the remote control, visually supports the red button-ring and acts as an anti-stress. People really play with it and they love it.

And got a convenient remote control

It is lightweight, compact, comfortable in the hand and has a nice shape. The buttons are easily distinguishable and arranged so that you can control the interface without looking up from the TV screen. And most importantly – it’s comfortable to sleep on.

Don't make extra buttons! 😖I always get confused with them.

It's nice when you can sleep on the remote control 😴

It's important that the remote is pleasant to hold

To summarise, we need a convenient, stylish and recognisable remote control!

Client's testimonial

It seems to me that the success of this remote control has a few secrets. Firstly, this is the creation of the design through a funnel: from an idea to industrial design. At each stage, we spoke to our customers and received feedback. Secondly, it is the research of remotes and the best solutions from around the world. We looked at about 60 samples of other companies and chose the best of them. Thirdly, it is the design professionalism of the guys at JetStyle, the divine vision of Maxim and colleagues. The remote control has turned out to be better than we expected: it is thin, comfortable, versatile and really memorable – our customers are delighted! And their happiness is precious. The created remote has become a symbol of the Dom.ru product in the hands of our customers!
